the Cloaca Maxima-The Mouth

In 33BC Agrippa as Aedile sailed down the great drain to inspect it after repairing and improving it greatly. This was a clever publicity stunt to draw attention to the achievement that Pliny calls “The most noteworthy achievement of all” NH 36.104.

The beginning of an ancient semi-underground arched brick passageway. It is a part of the Cloaca Maxima, the ancient sewers of Rome (about 2400 BC).
